Androgens
govern the development of human external genitalia. Exposure
to androgens beginning around the eighth week of pregnancy causes
undifferentiated tissue to develop in the male form. In the absence of
androgens development is in the female form. This effect is independent
of the genetic sex of the fetus. You
can observe the effect of androgens in these animations.
