Fur, Feather and Fin Day: Fly a hawk, tie a fly and catch a trout
Named after a famous series of books about country sports, our Fur, Feather and Fin Day introduces you to:
  • hunting with Harris hawks
  • tying trout flies
  • catching trout on a fly
Throughout the day you will be under the guidance of qualified game angling instructors and professional falconers

Martin Whitley

Geoff Stephens

Paul Kenyon

hawk to hand
  • The day begins with an introduction by Martin to his Harris hawk, dogs and ferrets that will be your hunting companions
  • You will be taught the basics of how to handle a hawk in a way that is safe to both you and the bird
  • Then we will move on to 15,000 acres of hunting grounds set within the heart of Dartmoor National Park
  • Our quarry is mainly rabbits and pheasants (in season)
  • you will get to see the incredible ability of the hawk as it strives to do what it was evolved for and catch its own quarry

After a leisurely lunch Paul and Geoff will show you how to use the fur of a rabbit and the feather of a pheasant to make two classic trout flies:
  • the Gold-Ribbed Hare's Ear
  • and the Pheasant Tail

In the afternoon Geoff and Paul will help you pit your wits with your fly against:
  • the wild brown trout of a Dartmoor river (in season)
  • or brown and rainbow trout on an exclusive stocked stillwater (all year round)
